HMRC identify problem with furlough claim system

HM Revenue & Customers launched its Furlough claim process yesterday processing 140,000 applications from businesses across the country. Chancellor Rishi Sunak confirmed that in just one day the claims exceeded one million employees that may have otherwise lost their jobs.

Unfortunately the HMRC system has experienced some issues which has impacted businesses who have any members of staff with a temporary NI number. Usually temporary NI numbers are issued for employees under the age of 16.

The issue here is that HMRC had not considered these employees and therefore claims have been rejected.

To add more complication, claims cannot be edited and you cannot cancel a claim and re-submit a new one.

HRMC are aware of the issue and are hoping to resolve it within the next 48 hours.
