McDonald’s has announced that it will be discontinuing 80% of its vegetarian options in the UK.
Four products, including Veggie Dippers, Veggie Dipper Happy Meals, Spicy Veggie Wraps, and the Vegetable Deluxe sandwich, will no longer be available. The vegan McPlant Burger will be the only remaining meat-free option.
The decision has reportedly been made due to poor sales of these menu items. However, McDonald’s has hinted that it is looking at other markets to determine which vegetarian and vegan products are the most popular, and may explore some new meat-free options in the future.
Many fans have expressed anger and disappointment at the change, with one customer saying that vegetarians and vegans are being “targeted” and are seemingly viewed by McDonald’s as “second-class citizens”.
A McDonald’s spokesperson commented on the decision:
“We’re always listening to our customers to help inform and evolve our menu.
After reviewing feedback, alongside the sales data of our Veggie Dippers, it’s clear this product does not match the appeal of McPlant for our vegetarian customers.
That’s why we’ve made the decision to remove them from the menu, as we focus on developing better vegetarian options that meet our high standards.
While McPlant remains a firm fan favourite and will continue to be the go-to-choice for our vegetarian and vegan customers, we recognise these changes may be disappointing for some.
We are actively learning from other markets to understand which vegetarian and vegan options are proving most popular and exploring exciting new offerings that we know customers will love.”
